It's not a hierarchy; no single pillar stands above the others. They work together, influencing one another as a relationship grows and changes.

Safety is something both people actively create through honesty, consistency, respect, care and the ability to be vulnerable without fear of punishment or withdrawal.

Assertiveness and Boundaries

Assertiveness allows for clear communication of needs, preferences and limits. Boundaries put those limits into practice, creating safety and respect for both people.

Regulation

Relationships can trigger intense emotions. Regulation includes self-regulation and co-regulation: recognising what is happening inside us, managing impulses, and calming activation, alone or with support from each other, so we can return to connection rather than reacting from overwhelm.

Validation

Validation means recognising both partners’ experience and holding what is true for each of us, even when those truths differ. It does not require agreement, but it protects against one person’s reality being dismissed. It communicates that both inner worlds matter.

Relationships experience conflict and challenge. What matters is whether we can return, take responsibility, understand the hurt and rebuild trust rather than allowing resentment to accumulate.
